Local Heritage

The area around Bryn Tanat has seen human settlements since the Iron Age. Less than two miles from the Hall itself is the ancient Iron Age fort of Carreghofa and the grounds of Bryn Tanat itself claim evidence, in the form of an ancient pit alignment, of human settlement dating back at least as far.

With the area being directly on the border of England and Wales there are evidence of conflict and trade almost everywhere. The nearby market town of Oswestry has been a fortified border town since Roman times and the site of the old town's fortification is still clearly visible to this day.

The border of England and Wales is dotted with fortifications and castles every few miles and the area around Bryn Tanat is no exception. With castles sited in nearby Oswestry, Whittington, Chirk, Welshpool, Shrewsbury and Montgomery this area provides extensive proof of its hotly contested past.

A little further afield though nearer to the present can be found the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution in Telford and the iconic Ironbridge. Showing that Shropshire and mid Wales are areas rich in history and character.
